Supraphysiological Dosage

Meaning

Supraphysiological dosage refers to the administration of a pharmaceutical agent, often a hormone or peptide, at a dose that results in circulating blood levels significantly exceeding the normal, naturally occurring range for that substance in a healthy individual. While therapeutic doses aim to restore physiological balance, supraphysiological doses are deliberately used to achieve pharmacological effects beyond what the body’s natural endocrine system can produce. Such dosages carry an increased risk of side effects and can lead to the suppression of endogenous hormone production, requiring careful clinical consideration.
