Supraphysiological Concentrations

Meaning

Supraphysiological Concentrations describe the level of an endogenous substance, such as a hormone, in the circulation that significantly exceeds the highest concentration naturally achieved during peak endogenous production or maximal stimulation. In clinical endocrinology, this term is used to characterize specific dosing regimens, for example in certain anabolic steroid or growth hormone therapies, that aim for pharmacological effects beyond mere physiological replacement. Sustained concentrations in this range carry a heightened risk of adverse side effects and profound suppression of the body’s natural hormone production.
