Supraphysiologic

Meaning

Supraphysiologic is a pharmacological and endocrinological term used to describe a concentration or dose of an endogenous substance, such as a hormone, that is significantly higher than the normal, healthy range typically found in the body. While often used in clinical settings to achieve a specific therapeutic effect that requires an intense hormonal signal, these levels can also be achieved through exogenous administration and may lead to non-native biological responses and potential adverse effects due to receptor saturation or pathway overload. The careful distinction between therapeutic and pathological supraphysiologic levels is paramount in clinical practice.
