Suprachiasmatic Nucleus SCN

Meaning

The Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN) is a tiny, paired structure located in the anterior hypothalamus of the brain, recognized as the body’s central, master biological clock. It is the primary pacemaker that generates and coordinates the body’s essential circadian rhythms, synchronizing the 24-hour cycles of sleep-wake, hormone secretion, body temperature, and metabolism throughout all peripheral organs. The SCN is directly entrained by light input from the retina, making it the central hub of chronobiology.
