Suprachiasmatic Nucleus Entrainment

Meaning

The specific process of synchronizing the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), the primary master clock located in the hypothalamus, to the 24-hour external cycle, predominantly through timed exposure to light and darkness. Successful entrainment is the physiological prerequisite for establishing a robust circadian rhythm, which in turn dictates the precise timing of nearly all endocrine and metabolic functions, including the diurnal cortisol and nocturnal melatonin rhythms. Mis-entrainment leads to systemic chronodisruption.
