Supra-Physiologic Levels

Meaning

Supra-physiologic levels describe concentrations of an endogenous substance, such as a hormone, that exceed the range naturally produced by a healthy, normally functioning human body. In clinical endocrinology, this term is primarily used to characterize the pharmacological administration of hormones at dosages intended to elicit effects beyond what is achievable through natural homeostasis. While sometimes used therapeutically for specific medical conditions, these levels are distinct from bio-identical replacement therapy and carry an increased risk of adverse effects, including suppression of the endogenous endocrine axes and potential long-term cardiovascular or metabolic complications.
