Substrate Utilization Efficiency

Meaning

Substrate Utilization Efficiency describes how effectively the body shifts between utilizing carbohydrates (glucose) and fats (fatty acids) as primary fuel sources based on immediate metabolic demand and hormonal signaling. High efficiency implies metabolic flexibility, allowing the system to readily burn stored fat when energy needs are low or during prolonged activity. This efficiency is a critical determinant of stable energy levels and body composition. Impaired efficiency forces an over-reliance on glucose, often leading to metabolic strain. We assess this flexibility as a measure of metabolic health.
