Substrate Oxidation Efficiency

Meaning

The measure of how effectively and flexibly the body’s cells, particularly the mitochondria, can utilize different energy sources—primarily carbohydrates (glucose) and fats (fatty acids)—to produce Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) for cellular energy. High efficiency signifies metabolic flexibility, where the body can readily switch between fuel sources based on availability and demand, which is a key marker of metabolic health and insulin sensitivity. Low efficiency is characteristic of metabolic dysfunction.
