Substantia Nigra

Meaning

The Substantia Nigra is a vital brain structure located within the midbrain, recognized by its distinctive dark pigmentation due to neuromelanin. It comprises two primary parts: the pars compacta (SNc), rich in dopaminergic neurons, and the pars reticulata (SNr), which functions as a major output nucleus of the basal ganglia. This anatomical region plays a critical role in the regulation of voluntary movement, motor planning, and reward-seeking behaviors.
