Substance P

Meaning

Substance P is an undecapeptide, an 11-amino acid neuropeptide, that functions primarily as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator, widely distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. Clinically, it is best known for its crucial role in the transmission of pain signals (nociception), acting as a potent mediator of inflammation and neurogenic inflammation. Its concentration is often elevated in conditions associated with chronic pain and inflammatory processes. It is a key molecule in the neuro-immune-endocrine axis.
