Subjective Reward Appraisal

Meaning

The internal, cognitive, and emotional process by which an individual consciously evaluates the anticipated value of a potential outcome versus the perceived cost (effort, time, discomfort) required to achieve it. This appraisal is a critical determinant of motivation and is heavily modulated by the baseline activity of the brain’s dopaminergic reward system, which is itself exquisitely sensitive to hormonal status. It represents the personal, biological lens through which effort is judged.
