Subcutaneous Fat Browning

Meaning

Subcutaneous Fat Browning is the process of inducing white adipose tissue (WAT) stored beneath the skin to acquire characteristics of brown adipose tissue (BAT), a metabolically active fat type. This conversion involves the induction of mitochondrial biogenesis and the expression of Uncoupling Protein 1 (UCP1) within the white adipocytes, transforming them into “brite” or beige adipocytes. Browning increases the thermogenic capacity of the subcutaneous fat depot, leading to enhanced energy expenditure and improved metabolic health. It is a highly sought-after mechanism in weight management and metabolic disease research.
