Subcutaneous Adiposity

Meaning

Subcutaneous adiposity refers specifically to the fat tissue stored directly beneath the skin, situated superior to the muscle fascia, which clearly differentiates it from visceral fat that is stored around the internal organs. This particular adipose depot is generally considered metabolically less active and less detrimental to cardiovascular health than visceral fat, serving primarily as a long-term energy reserve and thermal insulator. While its excessive accumulation is an aesthetic concern, its distribution patterns are profoundly influenced by sex steroid hormones.
