Subclinical Thyroid

Meaning

Subclinical thyroid refers to a mild form of thyroid dysfunction characterized by an elevated serum Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) level while free thyroxine (FT4) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels remain within their respective reference ranges. Individuals with this condition often experience no overt symptoms of thyroid disease, or their symptoms are very subtle and non-specific. This state indicates the thyroid gland is still producing adequate hormones, but requires increased stimulation from the pituitary.
