Subclinical Ovulatory Disturbances

Meaning

Subclinical Ovulatory Disturbances describe subtle, non-obvious abnormalities in the female menstrual cycle’s ovulatory phase that do not typically result in overt anovulation or grossly irregular menses but nonetheless impair fertility and overall endocrine health. These disturbances often manifest as a luteal phase defect, characterized by either a shortened post-ovulatory phase or inadequate progesterone secretion from the corpus luteum. They are “subclinical” because the patient often reports a seemingly normal cycle, masking the underlying functional insufficiency of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis.
