Subclinical Hypothyroid State

Meaning

A Subclinical Hypothyroid State is a common endocrine condition characterized by mildly elevated serum Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels, while the peripheral thyroid hormone levels, specifically free thyroxine (fT4) and free triiodothyronine (fT3), remain within the established laboratory reference ranges. This state represents a compensatory effort by the pituitary gland to maintain adequate circulating thyroid hormone levels, often preceding overt hypothyroidism. Clinically, it may be associated with subtle, non-specific symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, or mood disturbances.
