Sub Clinical Hypothyroidism

Meaning

Sub Clinical Hypothyroidism (SCH) is a common endocrine condition characterized by elevated serum Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels, indicating pituitary overstimulation, while circulating free Thyroxine (FT4) levels remain within the statistically defined normal reference range. It represents a compensatory state where the thyroid gland is functioning under duress but has not yet failed enough to cause the overt, symptomatic presentation of hypothyroidism. This subtle imbalance often contributes to non-specific symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and mild metabolic slowing.
