Structural Atrophy

Meaning

The pathological reduction in the size, volume, and functional capacity of a tissue or organ due to a decrease in cell size or cell number, or a loss of extracellular matrix components. In the context of aging and hormonal health, this refers specifically to the measurable loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), bone density (osteoporosis), and dermal thickness. Structural atrophy is a hallmark of systemic catabolism and hormonal decline.
