Stressor Habituation Training is a systematic physiological and psychological conditioning process that involves repeated, controlled exposure to a specific, non-damaging stressor to progressively diminish the magnitude of the body’s defensive response over time. The goal is to lower the allostatic load and improve stress resilience by shifting the body’s set point for the activation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system. Successful training results in a more efficient and less costly hormonal response to future challenges. This is a form of hormesis applied to the stress response.

The term is derived from behavioral psychology and stress physiology, combining the concept of a “stressor” with “habituation,” a form of non-associative learning where a response decreases with repeated stimulation. This training concept leverages the neuroplasticity of the stress axis. Clinical application of this principle is central to cognitive behavioral therapies and specific physical training modalities.
Mechanism
Repeated, non-threatening exposure leads to a neural dampening of the amygdala’s fear response and a more restrained release of CRH from the hypothalamus. This reduced central drive lessens the subsequent ACTH and cortisol secretion from the adrenal glands. The physiological outcome is a faster return to baseline heart rate variability and a reduced overall energetic cost associated with confronting the stressor.
