Stress Response Shutdown

Meaning

The rapid and complete deactivation of the sympathetic nervous system and the HPA axis following the cessation of an acute stressor, allowing for an immediate transition into a parasympathetic-dominant, restorative state. An efficient shutdown is a crucial biomarker of a highly resilient nervous system and is necessary for minimizing the catabolic and inflammatory consequences of stress. The inability to execute this shutdown is a hallmark of chronic stress pathology.
