Stress Response Plasticity

Meaning

Stress Response Plasticity refers to the inherent biological capacity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and the autonomic nervous system to flexibly adjust their intensity and duration of response in proportion to the magnitude of a perceived stressor. High plasticity is indicative of a resilient system that can rapidly return to baseline homeostasis after activation, preventing the chronic elevation of stress hormones like cortisol. Declining plasticity is a hallmark of allostatic overload and is directly correlated with accelerated aging.
