Stress Receptor Density

Meaning

Stress Receptor Density refers to the concentration and distribution of specific receptors, primarily glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) and mineralocorticoid receptors (MRs), on the surface and within the cytoplasm of cells, which bind to the stress hormone cortisol. The density of these receptors dictates the sensitivity and magnitude of a cell’s response to a given level of cortisol, fundamentally setting the individual’s physiological threshold for stress reactivity. Alterations in this density are a key mechanism of stress adaptation or pathology.
