Stress-Induced Impairment

Meaning

A state of measurable physiological or functional decline in a biological system—such as the immune, metabolic, or neuroendocrine systems—resulting directly from chronic or overwhelming psychological or physical stress exposure. This impairment is characterized by a maladaptive response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to sustained allostatic load and subsequent functional breakdown. It is a key factor in the progression of age-related disease.
