Stress-Induced Hypogonadism

Meaning

Stress-Induced Hypogonadism is a reversible state of functional hypogonadism characterized by the suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, leading to diminished production of sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen) and often manifesting as reduced libido, infertility, or menstrual irregularities. This condition is directly precipitated by chronic or severe psychological, metabolic, or physical stress, which drives sustained activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The body prioritizes the stress response and energy conservation over reproductive function, leading to a profound endocrine trade-off. Clinical recovery is contingent upon the resolution of the underlying chronic stressor.
