Stress-Induced Amenorrhea

Meaning

Stress-Induced Amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual periods for three consecutive cycles or more, directly caused by significant psychological or physiological stressors. This functional hypothalamic amenorrhea disrupts the brain’s signaling to the reproductive system via stress hormones. It is a diagnosis of exclusion, requiring other medical causes for menstrual cessation to be ruled out.
