Stress Erythropoiesis

Meaning

Stress erythropoiesis refers to the accelerated and often extramedullary production of red blood cells, or erythrocytes, that occurs in response to physiological stressors, particularly those inducing tissue hypoxia. This adaptive process differs from basal erythropoiesis by its rapid onset and capacity to utilize alternative hematopoietic sites beyond the bone marrow, aiming to restore oxygen delivery to vital organs and tissues.
