Stress Cortisol Rhythm

Meaning

The dynamic, often dysregulated, pattern of cortisol secretion in response to chronic psychological or physiological stressors, which deviates significantly from the healthy diurnal variation. A persistently elevated or flattened rhythm indicates chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to detrimental effects on metabolism, immunity, and sleep. Correcting this rhythm is a primary target in stress-related health management.
