Stress Axis Interference

Meaning

Stress Axis Interference describes any disruption or pathological alteration to the normal, adaptive function of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, the body’s central stress response system. This interference can manifest as blunted or exaggerated cortisol responses, loss of the normal diurnal rhythm, or altered receptor sensitivity. Chronic psychological or physiological stress is the primary driver of this dysregulation. Clinically, interference compromises the body’s ability to maintain allostasis, leading to systemic issues like immune dysfunction, metabolic syndrome, and mood instability.
