Stress Axis Decoupling

Meaning

Stress Axis Decoupling is a physiological state or therapeutic goal where the primary neuroendocrine stress response system, the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, maintains its acute reactivity to genuine threats while reducing or normalizing its chronic activation in response to non-life-threatening or perceived stressors. This decoupling is essential for preventing the long-term deleterious effects of chronic cortisol exposure on metabolism, immune function, and hippocampal neurogenesis. The aim is to restore appropriate HPA axis rhythmicity and sensitivity.
