Stimulant Dependence

Meaning

Stimulant Dependence is a neurobiological and physiological state characterized by the necessity of continued use of an exogenous compound, such as caffeine or prescription amphetamines, to maintain normal levels of energy, alertness, and cognitive function. This condition arises from the chronic overstimulation of the central nervous system, leading to receptor downregulation and the suppression of endogenous catecholamine and dopamine production. Dependence results in functional impairment upon cessation of the compound.
