Steroidogenesis Substrate Diversion

Meaning

A clinical concept describing the shift in the metabolic flow of cholesterol and its immediate derivatives (substrates) away from the production of one class of steroid hormones and toward another, often influenced by enzymatic activity or substrate availability. For instance, increased stress can divert precursors toward cortisol production (glucocorticoids) at the expense of sex hormones (androgens and estrogens). This diversion impacts the entire steroid hormone cascade.
