Steroidogenesis Substrate Availability

Meaning

The clinical and physiological status of the body’s supply of precursor molecules, primarily cholesterol, and necessary enzymatic cofactors required for the synthesis of all steroid hormones. Optimal substrate availability is a prerequisite for robust and balanced production of sex steroids, glucocorticoids (cortisol), and mineralocorticoids. Insufficient availability acts as a rate-limiting step, potentially leading to widespread hormonal deficiencies, especially under conditions of high demand or chronic stress. This availability is a critical determinant of endocrine reserve.
