Steroidogenesis Enzymes

Meaning

A specialized, interconnected family of cytochrome P450 enzymes, hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, and reductases that catalyze the biochemical conversions necessary for the synthesis of all steroid hormones, including glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex steroids like androgens and estrogens. These enzymatic pathways are primarily located in the adrenal glands, gonads, and placenta, and their activity dictates the profile and quantity of circulating steroid hormones. Genetic mutations or pharmacological inhibition of these enzymes can profoundly disrupt endocrine balance.
