Steroidogenesis Enzyme Variants

Meaning

These are naturally occurring genetic polymorphisms or mutations in the genes that encode the cytochrome P450 enzymes and dehydrogenases responsible for the sequential biosynthesis of all steroid hormones, including cortisol, aldosterone, testosterone, and estrogens. These variants can lead to partial or complete blocks in the steroid production pathway, resulting in characteristic hormonal imbalances and clinical syndromes, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
