Steroid Receptor Cross-Reactivity

Meaning

Steroid receptor cross-reactivity describes the phenomenon where a specific steroid hormone or a synthetic analog binds to and activates a steroid receptor other than its primary, intended target. For instance, a progestin designed to activate the progesterone receptor might also exhibit an affinity for the androgen or glucocorticoid receptor, leading to unintended side effects. This lack of absolute specificity is a critical consideration in the design and clinical application of all exogenous steroid medications.
