Steroid Hormone Precursor Competition

Meaning

Steroid Hormone Precursor Competition describes the metabolic phenomenon where a common molecular precursor, typically cholesterol and subsequently pregnenolone, is diverted down one steroidogenesis pathway at the expense of others due to enzymatic limitations or increased demand. This competition can lead to imbalances, such as the “pregnenolone steal” or “cortisol steal,” where chronic stress-driven cortisol production consumes precursors, thereby diminishing the synthesis of sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen.
