Sterile Filtration

Meaning

Sterile filtration is a physical separation process that removes viable microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and their spores, from liquids or gases without relying on heat or chemical agents. This technique involves passing the fluid through a membrane filter with a defined pore size, typically 0.22 micrometers or smaller, which physically retains the microbial contaminants while allowing the sterile fluid to pass through. It is an essential method for preparing pharmaceutical products and biological solutions that cannot withstand thermal sterilization.
