Stereoisomers

Meaning

Stereoisomers are molecules that possess the same chemical formula and sequence of bonded atoms but differ only in the three-dimensional spatial arrangement of their atoms. In endocrinology and pharmacology, this structural distinction is highly significant because the body’s receptors, which are proteins, are three-dimensional entities that often interact with only one specific stereoisomer, much like a lock and key. The two most common types are enantiomers, which are non-superimposable mirror images, and diastereomers.
