STEP Trial

Meaning

The STEP Trial, an acronym for the Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with Obesity, refers to a series of landmark, multi-national, randomized clinical trials that investigated the efficacy and safety of the GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide for chronic weight management in adults with overweight or obesity. These trials provided robust, high-quality evidence demonstrating that high-dose subcutaneous semaglutide achieves significant and sustained weight loss far beyond what was previously observed with anti-obesity medications. The results have fundamentally shifted the clinical paradigm for treating obesity as a chronic disease.
