Statin Interaction

Meaning

Statin Interaction refers to the pharmacological or physiological consequences that occur when a statin drug, a class of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors used to lower cholesterol, is co-administered with other medications or substances. These interactions can lead to altered plasma concentrations of the statin, increasing the risk of dose-dependent adverse effects such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, or conversely, reducing the statin’s therapeutic efficacy. Clinical evaluation of a patient’s entire medication regimen is crucial to preemptively manage potential cytochrome P450 enzyme competition or other transport-mediated interactions.
