SRD5A2 Variants

Meaning

SRD5A2 variants refer to the different polymorphic forms or specific genetic mutations of the gene that encodes the enzyme Steroid 5-alpha Reductase Type 2. This critical enzyme is solely responsible for the conversion of the relatively weaker androgen, testosterone, into the significantly more potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), primarily within target tissues such as the prostate, hair follicles, and skin. Variations in the SRD5A2 gene can result in altered enzyme activity or expression, leading to variable androgenic effects that clinically manifest as differences in prostate size, the individual risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia, and patterns of male-pattern hair loss. Genetic analysis of these variants can be highly informative for personalized risk assessment.
