SRD5A2

Meaning

SRD5A2 is the official gene symbol for the enzyme $5alpha$-reductase type 2, a critical steroid-metabolizing enzyme responsible for the irreversible conversion of testosterone into its significantly more potent metabolite, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This enzyme is predominantly expressed in androgen-sensitive tissues, including the prostate, seminal vesicles, and hair follicles, where DHT exerts its most pronounced biological effects. Clinically, the activity of SRD5A2 is a major factor in conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness), leading to the development of therapeutic inhibitors.
