SRD5A1

Meaning

SRD5A1 is the gene encoding the enzyme Steroid 5-$alpha$-Reductase Type 1, which is one of the three isoenzymes responsible for the conversion of testosterone into the significantly more potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This enzyme is highly expressed in non-genital skin, scalp, and liver tissue, where it plays a key role in local androgen action and metabolism. The activity of SRD5A1 is a major determinant of circulating DHT levels and contributes to conditions such as acne, hirsutism, and potentially male pattern hair loss. Its pharmacological inhibition is a therapeutic strategy in managing androgen-sensitive conditions.
