SRD5A Reductase

Meaning

SRD5A Reductase refers to a family of integral membrane enzymes, specifically the 5-alpha reductases, which catalyze the irreversible conversion of various 3-oxo-Δ4-steroids, most notably testosterone, into their corresponding 5-alpha-reduced metabolites. The most clinically significant reaction is the conversion of testosterone into the highly potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). These enzymes are crucial mediators of androgen action in target tissues and are essential for male sexual development and the regulation of androgen-sensitive tissues like the prostate and hair follicles. Pharmacological inhibition of this enzyme is a common strategy in treating androgen-related conditions.
