Spermiogenesis

Meaning

The final, intricate stage of spermatogenesis, the process by which haploid spermatids undergo a dramatic morphological transformation to become mature, motile spermatozoa. This differentiation phase involves the condensation of the nucleus, the formation of the acrosome (a cap containing enzymes necessary for fertilization), the development of the flagellum (tail), and the shedding of excess cytoplasm. This process is highly sensitive to hormonal regulation and environmental factors. Deficiencies in spermiogenesis are a common cause of male factor infertility requiring clinical investigation.
