Spermatogenesis Suppression

Meaning

Spermatogenesis suppression is the clinical or physiological process characterized by the significant inhibition or cessation of sperm production within the seminiferous tubules of the testes. This intentional or unintended effect leads to oligozoospermia or azoospermia, clinically resulting in male infertility. In hormonal contexts, it is a well-known side effect of exogenous androgen administration, which shuts down the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis via negative feedback. Understanding the degree and reversibility of this suppression is a critical consideration in male hormonal health management and fertility preservation.
