Sperm Morphology

Meaning

Sperm morphology is the scientific and clinical assessment of the size, shape, and structural integrity of the sperm cells within a comprehensive semen analysis, representing a critical parameter in the evaluation of male fertility potential. The assessment rigorously examines the characteristics of the sperm head, midpiece, and tail against strict, standardized criteria, such as the Kruger strict criteria. Abnormal morphology, clinically termed teratozoospermia, is strongly associated with a reduced capacity for natural fertilization and may indicate underlying defects in spermatogenesis or exposure to environmental disruptors.
