Sperm Integrity

Meaning

Sperm integrity is a comprehensive measure of the overall structural, functional, and genetic quality of a spermatozoon, essential for successful fertilization and healthy embryonic development. This evaluation includes assessing the morphology of the sperm head and tail, the functionality of the plasma membrane, and critically, the absence of damage to the DNA contained within the nucleus. Hormonal balance, particularly adequate testosterone and FSH levels, is fundamental to maintaining high sperm integrity. Poor integrity is a major factor in male factor infertility.
