Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay

Meaning

The Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay (SCSA) is a specialized clinical test used in male fertility assessment to evaluate the integrity of the DNA packaging within the sperm head. This assay quantifies the degree of DNA fragmentation or denaturation in sperm chromatin, which is a key indicator of sperm quality beyond standard motility and morphology. High levels of DNA fragmentation are clinically associated with reduced fertilization rates, recurrent pregnancy loss, and poor embryo development, reflecting underlying hormonal or oxidative stress.
