Sperm Capacitation

Meaning

Sperm capacitation is the crucial, complex series of physiological changes that mammalian spermatozoa must undergo within the female reproductive tract before they are capable of fertilizing an oocyte. This preparatory process is not a simple activation but a molecular transformation that alters the sperm’s motility pattern and prepares its acrosome for the subsequent reaction required to penetrate the egg’s outer layers. Capacitation is highly dependent on the precise biochemical environment of the female tract, which is itself regulated by circulating sex hormones. The success of this process is a key determinant of male fertility potential.
